Surprising relation between Fibonacci numbers and mile-kilometers conversion.
For people not in US, if you go to any movie in US the first 10 minutes are usually previews of future movies. Sometimes, it can preceded by movie trivia. This post is a game theoretic analysis of movie previews and the associated costs. You can choose to come 10 minutes later but you may be forced to sit in the front rows. I thought the analysis was interesting even though I don’t agree with the analysis. There are two things I liked – the comparison of TV Ads and Movie previews, considering the process of getting best seats as an all pay auction where the bid is time. Nice !!
The comments are even better. Do take some time to check out the comments !
Immunology is probably the most complex and exciting field in Biological sciences (Genetics comes a close next) . This post in MIT News talks about a fresh approach by MIT people to develop human immune cells in mice for more accurate modeling and testing of drugs.
I do sometimes feel that strict rules in US and other European countries does a disservice to cutting edge but risky research. May be we can at least allow desperate people to take risky treatments. But that is just my opinion.
Probably the biggest story of last week. More details are here and here. A more skeptical look is here (Thanks Roopa). I guess some good thing can come out of it. Cyber-Security will become more important. People will pressurize Adobe to make Acrobat Reader/Flash to be more secure. The quarterly security update cycle of Adobe is ridiculous and too slow in the current world we zero day exploits are becoming more and more common. Every one criticizes Microsoft, but look at their phenomenal improvement in the last 5 years. Its time other companies start raising the bar.
A related article on security flaw in TLS. TLS is how your financial transactions and other related stuff are kept safe.
That men will become extinct is a myth after all. Looks like the male chromosome is keeping itself up to date in contrast with the popular belief that it is stagnant and will be rendered useless in the future. It did not help that , it is the shortest chromosome in humans. Related article is here.
The health care of Denmark is reasonably futuristic. The problem is scaling it to US or India. Interestingly, Denmark has less than half the population of Mumbai or Delhi. Chennai or Bangalore comes close to its population.
An interesting article on new ways to improve search. I really like their idea of using random matrices. The current search techniques are interesting but IMHO they are just scratching the surface of Spectral Graph Theory.
A fun list to end the post.
