This post is primarily intended for people who are studying in University of Texas At Arlington , using Ubuntu and want to connect to uta hosts from the comfort of their home. I guess this steps should be applicable to other universities too.
I figured this out after a lot of trial and error and over the past one year , I used to email the details to my friends who started using Ubuntu. So I thought I will post it in the internet so that it is available for anyone who wants it.
1. Install vpnc package
“sudo apt-get install vpnc”
2. Create a configuration file for UTA. I assume that you want to name it as uta.conf . The file has to be in /etc/vpnc/ . I have used vim, feel free to use other editors.
sudo vim /etc/vpnc/uta.conf
3. Enter these information in the file
IPSec gateway 184.108.40.206
IPSec ID default
IPSec secret UTAsecret
Xauth username userid
4. As a note 220.127.116.11 was the ip address of UTA’s vpn server . Substitute it appropriately. UTASecret was the IPSec secret. It will be different for other universities.
5. Use the id to start and stop vpnc program
sudo vpnc uta (or the name of your file) [For connecting]
sudo vpnc-disconnect [For disconnecting]
Hope this is useful to some !
