Hello,
Thanks for visiting this blog. My name is Saravanan Thirumuruganathan. If you were looking for my personal/professional home page, it can be found here. I am a PhD student working in DBXLab with Dr.Gautam Das in Fall 2010. I finished my Masters in Computer Science at the University of Texas At Arlington working with Dr.Manfred Huber. In my masters , my Majors were the really cool fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining. I am broadly interested in data mining , machine learning , probability and statistics and many more.
In my free time I try to learn new (computer) languages, master Linux and try to contribute to open source. I used to write poems but somehow cant find enough time now 🙂
I started this blog primarily discuss my exploration of my data mining and machine learning. The original intention is to write some neat articles on cool ideas in ML in a largely math free way. Now a days my blog direction is more diffused and I mostly blog on Ubuntu , Chrome extensions , Python and a few random topics in data mining. Hopefully, I will return to ML fold soon !
If you have any topics in ML or Data Mining that you would like me to blog about shoot an email or post a comment !
Most of my friends are baffled by the title of the blog as I am an atheist. The title of the blog is a play on Paul Erdős‘s quote : “You don’t have to believe in God, but you should believe in The Book ” !!
Nice blog ..,
HI Bro,
Nice blog brother,I lik the caption also d explanation u gave for tat..
Keep Rocking 🙂
Thanks bro !
Good blogs. Sad that i didnt see it before
Thanks machi 🙂
Hi dude…gr8 work … keep it going…
Thanks Sriram!
Hi bro,
This is Balu, Udumalpet. Great work. I didn’t predict you this much. wonderful work. keep it up.
Thanks Anna !
I like your blog. I work on Machine learning and Computer Vision.
this really seems an interesting blog, glad I found it
your blog really help me a lot. thanks!
however i do have one more question (as a self-learner of machine learning):
do you have any recommeded book(and chapter) and video lectures for the probability and statistics?
tpeng2,
I learned them in a hard way. I read many books of probability and statistics before I have some idea. Here are some of my favorites :
(1) Probability and Computing by Mitzenmacher
(2) Introduction to Probability at http://www.dartmouth.edu/~chance/teaching_aids/books_articles/probability_book/book.html
(3) Understanding Probability by Henk Tijms
(4) All Of Statistics – A Concise Course in Statistical Inference by Larry Wasserman
There are few fascinating video lectures in videolectures.net : Introduction to Probability, Introduction to Statistics, Intro to ML etc. Of course, you can also start with some early MLSS (ML summer school) and start with them. Of course, it is fast paced but after few lectures you get up to the pace.
Hi, do you still have the videos for statistical machine learning?
Honglang,
I am not sure which lectures you are talking about. Most MLSS videos are available on the respective websites !
Great blog! I am becoming more interested in ML these days. Thanks for sharing.
Hi. I love Chrome Nanny except for one thing: I can go into the extensions and disable it.
Maybe I missed this in the instructions, but is there a way to block this out as an option? I mean other than hiring an actual nanny. 🙂
Thanks!
Pete,
Unfortunately, Chrome does not provide any way for extensions to prevent disabling themselves 😦
Awesome title and the explanation I don’t know much about Data mining though. 🙂
Can ya blog about recommender systems? I’d really love to read something on that. I’m researching about them and their relationship with KNN (That’s how I found this blog). Your article on KNN was quite informative as well 🙂
Hello Sneha,
I have been working on a blog post on reco systems. Will update the post sometime in the next few weeks.
Hi Sara,
This is really cool… Great blogs… Keep up the good work..
Hi, I am using your Chrome Nanny and it seems to do what I want it to. However, there is something flexible I would like to be able to do. I want to block a website for different parts of different days.
So, for example, I want to block abc.com Monday to Thursday 500am to 900pm, but Friday only from 500am to 300pm.
However, I can’t figure out how to do this in a single Block Name Set, and it will not let me do multiple Block Name Sets for the same URL.
Any way you can fix the extension to allow for this?
Thanks!
Chrome Nanny is awesome! This will lead to more productivity and more focus. What a wonderful tool you have made.
Hi, ur blog was very helpful 4 a new ubuntu user like me. Under SW center in Ubuntu I was looking for Bhagvad Gita but was unable 2 find it. i understand religion is not one of ur interests…but coming across Quran & Bible I would think that Linux will be able to accommodate Gita. ne help will b “helpful” 🙂
Jai Hind !
good day sir,
I was wondering if you would allow me a small interview via email in the coming days, hopefully sooner than Wednesday November 14. I am a freshmen attending Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in the Business Administration Program. In our program, the feature group project of the year is known as the New Venture Competiton, in which one must create a product/service and complete an internal and external analysis regarding the business envrionment; in any case, the product my group and I came up with is similar to your Nanny for Google Chrome, or in any case would be competition to one another.
Basically, I was hoping to ask yourself a few questions regarding the product; the creation of it, what it took to get it out on the market, etc. It would be extremely beneficial to my group and I, something we feel will push our project over the top (primary research), and would be extremely grateful.
I have no qualms about posting my email if you see need it, and I do hope to be in contact soon.
Sincerely, Seid.
happy chrome nanny user here…
Can you protect option page with password?
So I can use as parent control tool.
Thank you
how to delete the blocking TT
dear friend,
good day.

Dear Friend,

if i change pc / reinstall, can i sync all the black list?
thank you
William
It would be great if you could edit the “Shouldn’t you be working” line in chrome nanny.
Hey Saravanan,
I am a first year PhD student in EE at USC. I found your article on Markov inequality very helpful. Keep going!! 🙂
Dear Saravanan,
Thank you
